Whisky Club - Episode 1

Welcome one and all to Episode 1 of The Whisky Club!

Over the past couple of weeks I have been sampling new whiskies from AnCnoc and Peg Whisky. Today I will be sharing my thoughts on these whiskies. I hope you enjoy it!

x2 AnCnoc Whisky Reviews

AnCnoc 12 Year Old Scotch Whisky

It went down way too easy! And I’m not saying that’s a bad thing! This is a solid "everyday" kind of whisky. I'd imagine it would be a good dram for someone just starting to get into single malt whiskies.

On the nose it's a light and creamy aroma with a hint of honey. Taste is soft, sweet and smooth vanilla, very, very light and approachable. An "easy going" dram with a long, sweet & spiced, yet smooth finish.

Put it this way - you wouldn't feel that bad having a dram of this at 11am on a Tuesday morning. But don't quote me on that.

ABV: 40%

Bottle size: 70cl

AnCnoc Peatheart Batch 2 Scotch Whisky

I suppose I'm always a little sceptical when trying a new "smoky" or "peaty" single malt whisky. Purely because (personally) I've not yet found one that beats Lagavulin - and I'm okay with that. But, I must say, I gave a slow nod of approval as I indulged in this one. And no, for me it doesn't contest with Lagavulin, but to be honest, I don't think it's trying to. It's different...

It was a rich peaty aroma with toffee and vanilla on the nose, preparing you for a very full & well-balanced dram. Rich, peat smoke in taste - but not at all overpowering. Holding sweet, oaky notes, warm and smooth. A short & dry spiced finish.

Think camp fires and marshmallows. Definitely adding this bad boy to my "list".

ABV: 46%

Bottle size: 70cl

x3 Peg Whisky Reviews

Peg Whisky Blended Scotch Whisky

First up was the Blended Scotch Whisky by Peg. I'm not always too crazy about blended Scotch Whiskies if I'm honest. I've never been too impressed with them, or at least I'd never choose to drink one over a single malt. That being said, this blended dram from Peg definitely got me thinking. It was a very warm & smooth drop, a hint of orange, toffee, malt and a little spice. With it's soft and sweet finish, it did in fact leave me wanting more. So hats off to you on this one Peg.

ABV: 40%

Bottle size: 70cl

Peg Whisky Small Batch Exclusive Series 1

Thursday night is bath night. I'm talking candles, bath salts, spa music and a wee dram for company. This Thursday I was definitely in good company. This small batch exclusive from Peg Whisky was a real treat. First impression - it took me by surprise! Not sure if that was to do with the fact my bath was a thousand degrees and I was feeling a little fragile, but this dram sure grabbed my attention!

Toffee apple and orange spice on the nose, with a hint of cream. A mouthful of malty vanilla, with toffee notes. An oaky and crisp finish. Very approachable. Very satisfying.

ABV: 46%

Bottles released: 3000

Bottle size: 70cl

Peg Whisky Limited Edition No. I

Last, but definitely not least was the Limited Edition No.1 Whisky from Peg. This was a delightful drop. It was thick & smooth, with honey, spice and cinnamon notes - a real winter warmer! A long finish of sugar malt. Quite a complex taste to be honest, not your everyday whisky.

I could definitely imagine this being a perfect dram on a cold winters day, sipping it slow whilst watching a classic Western movie, like Tombstone.. “I'm your Huckleberry.”
